Chance for severe storms: Humid weekend to follow
Chances for severe weather Thursday Evening and Friday Evening
With no surprise, there is another chance for severe weather across much of Minnesota, with Thursday’s threat being a widespread marginal risk for severe weather and a slight risk for northwestern Minnesota. The primary threat for Thursday evening’s storms look to be large hail, with localized heavy rain in thunderstorms. Then, for Friday, we have a conditional threat for severe weather as tonight’s storms won’t be moved out until about 8:00 am. Much of the state will be under a slight risk for severe weather.
The late afternoon/evening storms on Friday will depend on morning convection or if it can break CAPE (Convective Available Potential Energy). Friday is looking to be a First Alert weather day. If storms do fire from Alexandria up to the Brainerd area, they have the chance to bring all hazards. The primary threat is damaging winds, large hail, and a few tornadoes are possible. The timing for these storms is looking to be 8:00 pm onward.
The rest of the weekend
Looking ahead to the rest of the weekend, we will see our first round of true hot summer days with much of the state being under an excessive heat watch through Sunday night. This is for temps reaching upwards of 95 degrees, and the heat index being around 105. This is thanks to being under an umbrella of humidity with dew points around the mid to upper 70s.
The week ahead
Once we get through this weekend, we will see a big cool down with another chance of thunderstorms Sunday night into the day on Monday. We are watching the models, but Sunday could potentially bring another risk for severe weather. To start off the week, we have a chance of showers through Wednesday with temps ranging from the mid 70s to upper 60s.
